Winter Visitors – Fieldfare was done for the Art6 topic of ‘wintering’ and of course my mind turned to one of my favourite subjects – birds. Many of you will have read the story in the news recently about a 5-month-old bar-tailed godwit that recently flew non-stop for 265 hours as it migrated more than 8,000 miles from Alaska to Tasmania breaking the world record for a non stop flight. Incredible! Many birds such as swallows and swifts spend the summer here in the uk and then fly south for the winter. However some birds choose the uk as their wintering place, such as the Fieldfare. Strangely these birds give me a cosy winter feeling and remind me of those crisp sunny, blue-skied winter days.
The original painting will come mounted on a matching painted frame – size 15 x 15 cm

My paintings are mainly painted on pure Chinese habotai 8 silk with specialist silk paints. I start each work with a drawing on paper and then trace the image onto a piece of white silk stretched onto a wooden frame. I then apply a special paint called gutta, which contains natural latex called gutta-percha, over my traced lines. This creates a resistive barrier through which the coloured ink will not flow. I apply the coloured ink with a brush and use salt dropped into the ink whilst wet to created textured effects.
The finished painting is removed from the wooden frame, ironed to fix the colour in the fabric and stretched onto acid-free mountboard ready for framing.
You can see a time lapse video of me painting here.
